Tubby`s Hi-Fi`s dread vacuum, pumping, with flying cymbals replaced by fragmented breakbeats. Big piano chords, similarly smashed and fractured. Controlled explosions replayed in slow motion. If there were a precedent for Smith & Mighty`s Dub dynamic, then it might be the Science Fiction steppers of Creation Rebel`s Starship Africa.

Long credited as trailblazers of the sound that Portishead, Massive Attack, and Tricky made famous, this reissue of Smith & Mighty's landmark debut, Bass Is Maternal, stands as a testament to their incredible influence and heritage. As the predecessors of the famed Bristol scene, Smith & Mighty set a blueprint: a precise convergence of dub, reggae, hip hop, jungle, and techno, later deemed 'trip-hop.' Recorded in 1989, Bass proved prophetic, featuring several tracks that showcase a smattering of sped-up breakbeats backed by a throbbing sub-bass, years before that sound officially emerged as 'jungle.' Utilizing moaning echoes and skittering beats that seem to slide sideways, 'Jungle Man Corner,' 'Drowning,' and the title track all eerily foreshadow the future. --Tricia Romano

Smith & Mighty are an English trip hop group from Bristol, England, consisting of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty. Their first releases, in the late 1980s, were breakbeat covers of 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' and 'Walk On By'.[1] Both songs entered the UK Singles Chart.[2] Their work was associated with the Bristol sound, a precursor to Trip Hop.[3]
They produced Massive Attack's first single, 'Any Love' released in 1988.[4][5] In 1989, they produced 'Wishing on a Star' for Fresh Four, which charted in the UK at number 10.
